Children’s duvets
Children’s duvets can quickly become a little one’s favourite. We usually recommend them from around 2–3 years of age up to about 7–8 years, when they typically grow into an adult size duvet. Children’s duvets are designed specifically for their height and proportions and have long been popular in families. In Hungary, the traditional 90 x 130 cm size is considered the standard version. The down content is selectable – and the higher the down ratio, the warmer and softer the duvet feels. If the duvet seems a bit large at first, it can be used crosswise so the child is less likely to roll out from under it overnight, and later it can be turned to cover them along the longer side. Below we also describe the other versions in a few words.
Many children love to stick to familiar things – sometimes even more than adults. Once they get used to a soft down children’s duvet, they often want to sleep under it every night, and it can be hard to take it away even for summer. For the warmer months there are lighter children’s versions, with smaller, denser baffle boxes that keep the significantly reduced amount of feather or down evenly distributed. This way the duvet remains cosy, but not too warm.
A practical trick for seasonal changes is a “secret swap”: simply replace the inner duvet inside the same cover when it is time to switch. The cover and the look remain the same, so many children barely notice the difference, yet they sleep more comfortably in a weight and warmth level suited to the season.
There is also an intermediate, so‑called youth size duvet, typically around 110 x 150 cm. This size is less common, but if you are specifically looking for it, it can usually be made to order. Its only real drawback is that it can be more difficult to find ready‑made covers for this dimension, so a custom-made cover from a seamstress may be the most practical solution.
When a child outgrows the small children’s duvet, it often makes sense to move straight to a standard adult size. An adult duvet can also be used crosswise at first, then, as the child hits a growth spurt in their teenage years, it will function perfectly as a full-size adult duvet. Another advantage is that covers in adult sizes are widely available in shops, so it is easy to refresh the look with new designs.
For the classic 90 x 130 cm children’s duvet, commercially available 90 x 140 cm small bedding sets are usually recommended. The cover is intentionally made slightly longer so that, once the duvet is inserted, the extra height gently pulls in the edges. This prevents the cover from sitting too tightly on the filling, allowing the duvet to remain puffy and comfortable while keeping its shape over time.
When choosing among different children’s duvets, consider size, filling type and warmth level together. A well-chosen duvet supports restful, balanced sleep and can accompany your child through several important years of growth. By paying attention to the right dimensions and compatible covers, you can create a practical, easy-to-care-for bedding set that looks good and feels inviting night after night.
